This book is a culmination of my exploration in graphic design, a semester where I practiced my skills and discovered the power of following instinction in the creative process. The book reflects not just the final design products but also the research and thought processes behind them which include xix research papers delving into topics that sparked my design projects and five design projects, ranging from the potential of AI in design to the evolution of information visualization.

As a photographer and designer, I work with light and shadow, ephemeral and eternal. Drawing inspiration from the history of my current living city Boston and my experience of doing street photography, my latest project seeks to reveal the city’s history and spirit through the interplay of the photography and graphic design by blending the traditional documentary photography with design strategies to frame moments that evoked my emotions and curiosities.

Being inspired by the great movie Interstellar, graphic designer Hangi and I grouped together and delved into the intricate narratives of film through a reinterpretation. Our endeavor is to explore the essence and the structure of the story from a unique angle. Our primary goal was to reimagine Interstellar, showcasing its themes from a new vantage point. Interstellar, our chosen film, presents a story of technology and human emotion through elements like robots, spaceships, the fifth dimension, the wormhole, family, humanity, time travel, outer space, etc.

Collecting and visualizing data is a challenging but fundamental skill for designers. With a personal interest in traditional Chinese cultural heritage, I chose to document the 2024 Chinese New Year celebration in Boston, a long-standing event that brings people of diverse backgrounds together. This year, being the year of the dragon, a significant symbol in Chinese culture, the celebration held special meaning. After photographing the event, I used 300 photos I took from the celebration to make a large size poster, Dragon Year. Nine riso posters were developed after as the complementary posters to present Chinese new year elements.

This project delves into the complexities of translation, not just between languages, but within them. This album-like book transcends a simple bilingual layout, featuring a conversation about design between a Chinese designer Aaron Nieh, and the Fake Magazine. I experimented with typography, exploring how text interacts with the page from the overall composition to the precise arrangement of letters. The design choices play with the concepts of communication and miscommunication.

Curiosity and exploration have always driven human progress. This project exemplifies that spirit, documenting the learning process of a designer like myself, fusing my passions for baking and 3D modeling, both embracing the transformative power of creating something tangible. This process involved recreating a realistic donut not just in the real world, but also in the digital realm, drawing parallels to my prior experience making donuts in a bakery. The outcome isn't just a 3D printed donut; it's a packaging design infused with the "recipes" for donut-making, bridging the physical and digital worlds. This project has challenged me to explore the potential of graphic design as a powerful tool for visualizing concepts, thought processes, and even sensory experiences.

It is with great enthusiasm that I introduce this captivating exploration into the realm of conceptual photography and its profound impact on the narrative of visual storytelling. As I embark on this journey through the lens of artistic visionaries, I found ten related sources to share in this book. The significance of this book extends beyond a collection of essays but photographs and visual art pieces, which are also good sources of inspiration for photography and visual art enthusiasts.
